Butane refill adapters

The small tip that lets a standard butane can refill a not-so-standard valve. Here is what they do and how to find the right one.

Why adapters

Not every valve is the same

Butane cans ship with one of a few standard nozzle shapes, and gas lighters were built with an equally varied set of fill valves. Match the two and refilling takes seconds. Get the fit wrong and the gas escapes around the seal instead of going into the tank.

An adapter bridges that gap. It is a small tip that seats your butane can cleanly onto a particular style of valve, so the fuel goes where it should. Most modern lighters share a common valve and take the can's stock nozzle directly. Older and unusual models are where an adapter earns its place.

The REWICKED adapter codes

I sort adapters by a simple code so you can match one to your lighter at a glance. Find your lighter's code on its product page, then pick the matching adapter below.

Using one

Fitting and refilling

Bleed first. If the lighter has been sitting, press the valve pin briefly to release the old air before you refill.

Seat the adapter. Push the adapter firmly onto the butane can's nozzle, then hold the can upside down and press it straight down onto the valve. Keep everything in line so the seal stays tight.

Short bursts. A few seconds is usually enough. Let the lighter settle for a moment before you light it, so the fresh fuel can stabilise.

For the full routine, including setting the flame height and what to do in cold weather, see the gas lighter guide.
